A-Game BJJ Sound Design for Intro Video

Brand Sound Design

RyanAudio

This is an introduction video for A-Game BJJ, a side project of mine. The animation was created by Tim Hashko (steamingkettle.net), and I designed the audio.

I experimented with various sound effects and methods to get the right sound. I wanted something earthy and strong, but also clear and thoughtful. The final sound effect is a kettlebell scraping against the concrete, layered with sounds of a tape measure and a Tibetan Bell.

Bigfoot Yancey, Welcome to the City EP, Music Production by Ryan Sellick

Bigfoot Yancey is a folk Americana band from Indianapolis, Indiana. These talented gentleman are also friends of mine! I was pretty stoked when they asked me to help them with some music recording.

My equipment was limited, and the space wasn't ideal, but I made do. I used several different microphones on the band to capture a live performance of each song on the EP. Once we recorded a good performance of each song, we layered in a few additional tracks, and did some minor editing. The album was mixed and mastered by Ryan Koch at the Ark Barn Studio.

The full EP is available on Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.

This is a quick, intentionally low-quality Instagram video I created for my friends in Bigfoot Yancey to help promote their album release show.

Here’s a little backstory.

The band scheduled an album release show at a venue in Indianapolis, and weren’t selling as many tickets as they anticipated. The week before the show, it was discovered that the venue was charging close to $5 in fees for a $13 pre-sale ticket (nearly $18 total). The band felt this was excessive, and the venue allowed them to sell 100 tickets at Square Cat Vinyl and charge the buyers a flat $13.

So, I overhear this entire story while drinking coffee in Square Cat Vinyl and working remotely. Mike Angel (lead singer of Bigfoot Yancey, part owner of Square Cat Vinyl), struggled to create a video to advertise the event. I offered to help.

After 15 minutes of shooting footage on my smartphone, and another 45 minutes of editing, I gave him this silly video.

The video was a hit on social media, quickly racking up thousands of views between Instagram and Facebook. I attribute the video’s success to Mike’s over-the-top “Crazy Mike” persona, and the repetition of the catch phrase “No Fees”.

Before we started the video, the band had sold 50 tickets. In the following week, they quickly sold out of the 100 tickets provided by the venue. Bigfoot Yancey ended up selling 324 tickets in a 400 capacity venue, a resounding success.

Music Video Production – 2017

RyanMusic, Video

I helped my friend Jessica Haeckel (Gemiinii Riisiing) create this music video.

Jessica has been creating music videos and performing covers for her YouTube audience for over 10 years. She approached me with the song about 80% complete, and had a specific vision for the music video. I helped her finish the song and complete this vision.

With her guidance, I contributed the drums and guitar to this song. I also helped her a bit with Audio Effects and mixing.

With the recording complete we began planning out the music video. She had a vision which involved desert footage, using a blue screen, and a beach fire dancing sequence. However, once she started experimenting with a mirror effect and the fire dancing footage, we decided that this alone was interesting and effective enough to be the entire video. The mirrored flames combined with the drone footage created an intense kaleidoscope effect, which we both found to be relevant to the song.

Super EGO Extreme Grappling Open postcard design by Ryan SellickSuper EGO Extreme Grappling Open postcard design by Ryan Sellick

This is a postcard design I created for Extreme Grappling Open, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament event in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The tournament director wanted a comic book feel for this postcard. I watched a few Photoshop tutorials on YouTube and combined a few different visual treatments to achieve this effect.

Once this postcard design was approved, I prepared the final print file and merged it with the company's mailing list using Adobe InDesign.

This postcard was sent to over 2,000 recipients across the Midwest United States.

Ice Trike Treats Logo Design by Ryan Sellick

Logo Design – 2016

RyanGraphic Design

A local Indianapolis ice cream cart business owner contacted me about designing a logo for his cart and T-Shirts. After some discussion, we agreed to give the logo a bit of 60's vintage look to it.

Admittedly, I don't have much hands-on experience creating logos, but I do understand what makes a good logo. After some research, I created dozens of sketches and selected the following for him to review:

Once the client made his decision, I created the final logo using Adobe Illustrator. He was very happy with the result.
