Virtual Reality Space Maze, Interactive Application Design by Ryan Sellick and Jon Sheldon

This is a virtual reality project for the Graduate level Multimedia Application Design course at IU's School of Informatics and Computing, and surely one of the most ambitious projects I've ever done.

Given the freedom to create whatever we want, my partner Jonathan Sheldon and I chose to go the experimental route and explore the virtual reality technology at IUPUI's Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL).

We decided to create an application for what the AVL staff calls The Cave. The Cave is a virtual reality system that has movable walls, 3D motion tracked glasses and a single handheld controller. We noticed there were only a few completed projects created for the Cave, so we wanted to help by contributing a project that might serve as a good demonstration for the technology.

Neither of us had experience with Virtual Reality. My partner had some experience in 3D Animation and 3D modeling, and my primary experience at the time was in Design and Audio/Video Production. Virtual Reality is complex, so we decided to create something simple and effective, to limit the user functions while keeping the game interesting. Eventually we arrived at the concept of a maze with a time-constrained objective.

My partner Jonathan Sheldon designed and modeled the base using Maya. I was responsible for creating the Unity 3D game space, coding the game functions with JavaScript, and launching the application using MiddleVR. This was all entirely new to me!

IUPUI The Cave Virtual Reality Multimedia Application Design Project

The goal of the game is to fix 3 radiation leaks within a 5 minute time period. A person over the radio helps by giving instructions, and the Geiger Counter sound helps orient the player towards the objective.

The result was a resounding success! The team at IUPUI enjoyed the project and they continue to demo the technology using our project. The President of MiddleVR played the game as well!

We could not have completed this without the help of the Advanced Visualization Lab wizard Chauncey Frend. That guy is awesome!

NOTE: The project seems to work best on Firefox. The web application for MiddleVR is a little buggy, especially with the audio.

Endurance Training Center BJJ ad card design by Ryan Sellick

Ad Card Design – 2013

RyanGraphic Design

I created this ad card design to help promote the 30 day free trial and children self defense programs for Endurance Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training Center in Zionsville, Indiana.

The card was two sided, created to market to children as well as adults. Note: I did not create the martial arts kids illustration on the first page or the logo, these were provided to me by the client.

Dead Birds Adore Us Wordpress Website Design by Ryan Sellick

I created this website to promote my band, Dead Birds Adore Us. I learned a lot about Wordpress Website Design in the process.

The purpose of the website was to be a central hub for the band, where fans and potential fans could connect with the band and learn all about us.

Sound Design for Video – 2013

RyanAudio

Tim Hasko (steamingkettle.net) created this video for his video class at IUPUI, and asked that I put a few finishing touches on the audio. I added some sound effects, included some dramatic score and made sure everything was mixed properly. I used Cakewalk Sonar X1 to create the final audio for this video.

Dead Birds Adore Us – 2012

RyanMusic

This is a live music performance by my band Dead Birds Adore Us (Psychedelic Progressive Hard Rock) at the Earth House Collective (RIP) in Indianapolis Indiana.

Before we added singer Wes Sims to the band, we were entirely instrumental. To keep the audience's attention to the music, we used live-edited projected visuals at our show (by Jerin Kelly of Bigfoot Yancey).

Omniture Infographic Design by Ryan Sellick

Here's a fun little illustration I created during my internship at Delivra. The purpose of this Infographic Design was to help explain the role of Omniture software in Delivra's email marketing system. The illustration was included in an Omniture marketing whitepaper.

Celeste Odell (Senior Graphic Designer) sketched this design, and I created the final drawing using Adobe Illustrator.

Game Starr Ficticious Sketch Comedy Commercial by Ryan Sellick and Brandon Dennett

Fictitious Ad Video and Sound Design – 2012

RyanAudio, Video

I partnered with Brandon Dennett to create this project for our Foundations of Digital Production Class, as part of the core Graduate Media Arts and Science program at IUPUI. The project encompassed an interactive website, a flash game, and the video shown here.

We decided to do a humorous commercial using sound to tell a story. The dad finds a (fictitious) video game online called Woodland Critter Christmas (South Park origin), and neglects to check the rating before gifting it to his son for Christmas. The commercial is advertising a fake online video game website that helps the user select appropriate video games for the holidays.

Brandon and I shared the writing and directing role. Brandon edited the video, I designed the sound effects and score.

Doritos Spec ad for Doritos Crash the Super Bowl 2012 Sound Design by Ryan Sellick

Ad Sound Design – 2011

RyanAudio

This is a spec ad for the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl 2012 campaign, created and directed by Tim Hashko (Steaming Kettle). I was responsible for Sound Design as well as mixing and mastering the audio. Mike Boris was the voice-over talent for this video.

I recorded sound effects of the Doritos bag, snoring, and the Television voice-over. I EQed the voice over to make it sound like it's coming from the TV, and I carefully placed the score that was provided to me. The dog sounds were created by combining archive sounds. The audio was compiled in Cakewalk Sonar X1 and mastered with Sony Soundforge.
